Just What In The Heck Is Parkour, And How Can I Do It In Texas?

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Parkour. You may have seen it performed in the latest James Bond movie, “Casino Royale,” and in the futuristic French movie, “District B-13.” Young, athletic men moving from rooftop to rooftop, room-to-room, sidewalk to balcony, using a variety of fantastic leaps, bounds and landings.

According to the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, “Parkour or art du d’placement (English: art of displacement) is a physical art of French origin, the aim of which is to move from point A to point B as efficiently and quickly as possible, using principally the possibilities of the human body. It is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment — from branches and rocks to rails and concrete walls — so parkour can be practiced in both rural and urban areas. Male parkour practitioners are recognized as traceurs and female as traceuses.”

It’s not quite an extreme sport, but more of a martial art that’s now practiced by thousands of individuals on university and college campuses in Dallas, Houston, elsewhere in Texas and throughout the country. According to parkour founder David Belle, “The spirit of parkour is guided in part by the notions of ‘escape’ and ‘reach,’ that is, the idea of using quick thinking with dexterity to get out of difficult situations, and to be able to go anywhere one desires.”

According to Belle, when you’re in a hostile confrontation with an individual, you’ll be able to speak, fight or flee. And since martial arts train for the fight, parkour trains for the escape.

An important characteristic of parkour is efficiency. This means that a traceur must not merely move as fast as he can, but move in a way that is the least energy-consuming, while simultaneously the most direct. And because parkour’s unofficial motto is tre et durer (to be, or to exist, and to last), the quick efficiency also involves avoiding injuries, both in the short and long-term.

Parkour got its start in Paris twenty years ago when two teens began devising moves to swiftly get from one point to another to rescue someone or escape in an emergency. The sport, also sometimes called free running, has been creeping into U.S. culture in recent years through YouTube clips.

For all its risks, parkour encourages good habits and pushes discipline and self-improvement. True traceurs aren’t smokers, because it would hurt their endurance. Nor do they drink or take drugs while running, because it would hurt their balance and agility. Parkour web sites post daily exercises such as push-ups and other calisthenics that focus on strength and flexibility. Veteran traceurs often urge newbies not to show up for training sessions until they can finish a hard three-mile run.

When it comes to performing parkour, there are fewer predefined movements than in gymnastics and other extreme sports. Parkour is not a sport that’s made up of a list of appropriate “moves”.

Every obstacle a traceur faces presents a unique challenge on how they address it and overcome it effectively and efficiently. This will depend on an individual’s body type, speed and angle of approach, the physical make-up of the obstacle, etc.

Parkour is actually primarily about training the body and mind to be able to react to obstacles appropriately with a technique that works. But many times the technique used defies classification and is not given a name. In many cases, effective parkour techniques depend upon rapid redistribution of body weight and by incorporating the body’s momentum to perform seemingly impossible or difficult body maneuvers quickly.

The adsorption and redistribution of energy is also important, because as body rolls during a landing, it needs to reduce impact forces on the legs and spinal column. This allows a traceur to jump from greater heights than those often considered sensible in other forms of acrobatics and gymnastics. According to David Belle, you want to move in such a way that will help you gain the most ground as if escaping or chasing toward someone or something. Despite this, there are many basic techniques that are emphasized to beginners for their versatility and effectiveness.

Most important are good jumping and landing techniques. The roll, used to limit impact after a drop and to carry an individual’s momentum onward, is often stressed as the most important technique to learn. Many traceurs develop joint problems from too many large drops and rolling incorrectly.

Unusual and physically demanding sports such as parkour can be a great way to exercise to maintain good health.

Mountain Climbing Isn’t For Everyone But It Is Addictive

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Mountaineering (mountain climbing) is a classic sport, which has been done for countless years. Combining rock, snow, and ice climbing with hiking and sometimes camping, and it is understandable why it is such a timeless sport.

Mountaineering has one goal: to reach the next summit, or the top. There are many mountains, all with different heights and obstacles and so it is easy to accommodate anyone’s level of experience, beginner to expert. Many start out learning how to mountain climb by essentially hiking up hill. It is a good place to start because it is far less intimidating to ease your way into the sport.

Mountain climbing experiences are unpredictable. Because of this, it not only physically stimulates you, but mentally as well. Environment can range from freezing to sweltering hot (even in the same day!) as altitude, weather and sub angles change. These changes challenge your mental ability to plan in advance, improve, problem solve, and navigate, while physically challenging your physical conditioning and climbing skills.

You must be well prepared in regards to the experience you have and the equipment you bring along. To start, you can get by with basic hiking equipment such as rations, tents and sleeping bags. As difficulty increases, however, so does the amount of stuff you need. This is where the ropes and other equipment and gear used for climbing and survival become necessary.

If you think mountaineering may be something that you are interested in, there are a few things to do to start pursuing the sport. First and foremost, note that mountain climbing, regardless of level, requires a certain amount of time, money, and fitness. If you can accommodate that, the next to do is figure out which type of mountain climbing is best for you.

Some things to consider, as you are trying to decide the best type of climbing for you, are if you enjoy hiking or climbing more, your preferred type of weather to be active in, and how much work you want to put into the sport. If you’re unsure, try a few beginners’ trails in different areas and decide what you like about each and dislike.

It may be a good idea to hire a mountain guide if you are a beginner. Mountain guides are professionals who can help you up a mountain safely, as they are generally adept climbers and/or skiers, who know the terrain. They can fill you with useful advice and help you learn skills. This goes for those wanting to take on a highly advanced mountain, or a self taught mountaineer, as mountain guides, especially certified ones have usually done numerous trainings and has seemingly countless hours of personal experience for you to learn from.

Many people have come to love mountain climbing from complete obsession to fun hobby. If you are interested in mountain climbing, it is definitely something people everywhere will tell you is worth pursuing!

Is a Boat Rental Club Right for You

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Owning a boat is a dream for many Americans, but one that can turn into a nightmare of unforeseen costs. Many novice boaters don’t realize all the costs associated with purchasing a boat and wind up with an expensive driveway ornament aside their car instead because they can’t afford gas, insurance or the other myriad things boat owners must pay for.

In recent years, enterprising business people have begun offering a solution for the high price of boat ownership: Boat rental clubs. These clubs rent out their fleet of boats to members on a daily, weekend or even monthly basis at a discounted cost. For example, one marina in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida charges non-members $329 to rent a 21-foot bow rider, but a member of the club would pay just $136, not including gasoline.

Typically, boat rental club members must pay yearly dues in order to receive the discounted prices. However, once most boaters add up the costs of insurance, gasoline, storage, docking and maintenance, not to mention the actual purchase of the boat itself, they find that joining a rental club saves them money. Boat rental clubs may also offer their members other benefits such as discounts on equipment rentals like skis or scuba gear, discounts at local restaurants and a special price on gasoline and oil.

Membership plans vary from club to club. Some offer annual memberships with a high initial cost and lower costs for renewals. Some offer a flat annual fee with no further rental costs. Some offer seasonal memberships. Be sure you understand all the terms of the membership agreement and don’t allow yourself to be pressured into more of a membership than you feel you need. For example, if you’re new to boating and unsure how much you will actually use your membership, a multi-year contract is probably not the best choice for you.

Finally, if you are an avid boater and plan on taking your boat out for several days every week, or for a series of long trips, a boat rental club may not offer you the same savings as it would a more casual boater. To see if a rental club would save you money, total up all the costs associated with your boat and divide that by the number of days you plan to use it in a year. Then add up all the costs associated with a boat rental club membership and divide by the number of days you will use your membership. Whichever number is lower will be the most cost-effective option for you.

Rock Climbing Equipment And Techniques

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Free climbing as a sport has become extremely popular with over hundreds of people following the sport in the United States alone. Free climbing, also known as Rock climbing involves climbing up rocks by making use of particular equipment for safety.

Over the years it has become more and more popular due to the improvement in climbing equipment.

Rock Climbing Equipment: Even though a person can climb a rock without making use of any equipment, it is not easy to climb without getting harmed. Every single one of the equipment is for safety, excluding the shoes. Climbing shoes improve the climbing capacity to a great extent just as running shoes improve running capacity.

Rock climbing shoes: A pair of climbing shoes is the most practical part of climbing equipment. Developments in designing of shoes alone have made it possible for climbers to climb a lot of rocky regions that could not be climbed in the past. The recent climbing shoes have a firm, rubber sole that gives protection to the foot from pointed, coarse rock, and gives more friction. Climbing shoes have a firm fitting to avoid the foot from slipping. The firm fit makes it very uncomfortable, however, the enhanced friction and control they give is far more important than the uneasiness.

Rock Climbing Rope: The climbing ropes are a main part of safety equipment. These days they are made of kern and mantle. The materials included in making these ropes are constant plaited nylon fibers, the mantle, kern are bordered by a plaited nylon external covering. This is better than the usual laid rope i.e. three huge strands curled, with the external covering guarding the core. Climbing ropes are powerful as they are able to stretch a little under pressure. The rope prevents climbers from falling to the ground. Climbing ropes are generally ten to eleven millimeters in diameter and fifty meters i.e. approximately 165 feet in length.

Rock Climbing Carabiners: Carabiners, which are continuously utilized in climbing, are basically rings of firm aluminum with a spring-loaded gate for unfastening. Usually, the spring grips the gate closed at all times, however the gate can be unfastened to attach a rope.

Webbing: Tubular nylon webbing is used at all times in climbing. It is prepared by weaving nylon into a flat tube measuring an inch from corner to corner. It is extremely sturdy and has a tensile strength of approximately 2 tons!

Harnesses: This is used to fasten oneself onto a rope with a sewn harness. A usual harness has a broad nylon belt that is tied around the waist and a pair of leg loops that are tied around the thighs. Once a climber is supported by this kind of a harness, most of the weight is put on the legs, instead of the waist, which makes it reasonably easy to hang in.

Belay Devices: The belay helps to cling on to the rope and stop a climber from falling. This is very difficult if you do not make use of a belay device. A belay device helps to stop the rope or pass the rope through easily.

Parley Vous Rock Climbing?

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Climbing is one of those sports that has a devoted following. You are not sort of interested in it. You quickly become a fanatic. With this fanaticism comes a certain language of terms developed by climbers, a language you need to know.

As you might guess, there are different types of climbing. Sport climbing is a version that allows for the perfection of technique without a lot of the steps that slow a climb down. Bolts are pre-placed, so you do not need to place them.

The sewing machine is somewhat of a derisive term that most new climbers experience at one point or another. A climber reaches a certain height that makes them nervous. The leg spasms out of control like a sewing machine needle going up and down.

As with any sport, a bit of practice will help your climbing. For many, this means bouldering. Bouldering is simply climbing on boulders or other surfaces that provide interesting challenges, but are not particularly high and thus fairly safe.

The next step down from a bolt is a camming device. The device is placed in cracks on the climbing surface. The modern version is spring loaded, so it snaps open in the space creating friction and a hold that can support a lot of weight.

Climbing is full of slang terms. A chicken head is one and it refers to a jutting of rock that forms a smooth knob you can use for a handhold. There is a very adult slang term also used for this, which you can probably guess.

Fugitive climbing refers to a climber that climbs lopsided. They tend to use either the left or right arm for all strength moves and wear out or injure the arm. Fugitive refers to the movie with Harrison Ford where the villain is a one-arm man.

Frog in the headlights is a slang term used for a climber that freezes when they look down from a high climb and get intimidated. Their eyes get big like a frog and they freeze like a deer in the headlights of a car.

One you get serious about climbing, the subject of holds will come front and center. A jug hold is a rock formation that is perfectly shaped for the hand. They tend to be rounded and taper down the back so you can put your hand over in the most comfortable way.

These terms and explanations represent the basics of rock climbing. Every area and group of climbers has their own expressions for various moves, routes and what have you. Just jump on in and you will pick it up quickly.

Rock Climbing Styles

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

Rock climbing can be divided into two main types i.e. indoor and outdoor rock climbing. There are a variety of styles of rock climbing. Two of the most common styles are: The Traditional and Sport style.

Rock climbers use other styles too. Most of them prefer to use the style that suits them the best. This article will provide you with the different styles of rock climbing and its features.

Traditional style:

Traditional rock climbing is also commonly known amongst climber as trad climbing. A traditional rock climber is known as trad climber. This style involves exploration and establishment of new routes. This style requires a lot of skill including self control, gear placement, route finding, down hill climbing, etc. This style came into existence before the sport style of climbing. This style is unaided with permanent anchors to help while ascending. It is more physically and mentally challenging than sport climbing. A trad climber uses a rope and places nuts and hexes in crevices to ensure safety.

Sport style:

Sport style of climbing unlike traditional climbing lets the climber use permanent anchors for protection. These anchors are fixed to the rock face to assist the climb. Sport climbing requires gymnastics abilities, endurance and strength. Sport climbing is safer compared to traditional climbing. The gear too is different. It includes bolts and quick draws i.e. a small sling, which has carabiners on both ends. Sport climbing can be both indoor as well as outdoor. Indoor sport climbing developed because climbers wanted to practice climbing throughout the year.

Bouldering:

This style of climbing requires the climber to have great strength, endurance and concentration. The climber needs to use all these skills to work a way through the boulder route. This style is more dangerous and requires experience. This style is practiced indoors as well as the outdoors. While bouldering, climbers usually do not get their feet a couple of feet above the ground surface. Bouldering does not include any ropes or belay placed at the bas of the cliff. The only gear required for this type of rock climbing is shoes, crash pad and chalk. Bouldering involves a series of problems known as routes. These routes are series of moves a climber needs to practice over and over again. Additional moves will increase the challenge. It is advised that bouldering should not be done at great heights.

Solo style:

The solo climbing style is the most dangerous style of climbing. It is also considered by most of the climber as the freest style of climbing. This is so because the climbers climb alone i.e. without any partner, protection or rope. This style of climbing is best left to the experts. The main aim of such a climb is to reach the summit.

Ice climbing:

As the name suggests, this style of rock climbing includes climbing on ice. One does not need to be told that it is going to a cold climb. Ice climbing means climbing a vertical wall of ice and this ice wall may be formed by a frozen waterfall. The tools required for ice climbing are quite different from the tools used in the other styles of climbs.

Rock Climbing - What You Need To Get Started

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Getting started on rock climbing might be a complicated task, with a list of the things that have to be used. It is easy to learn just to enjoy this adventurous sport.

Improve your Water Skiing Skills

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Techniques are what set the master different from the student. A pro is differenced from the amateur because of the technique. Like all other sports, skiing involves a lot of techniques too.

These techniques will set you out to be different from other fellows. They will help you perform much better and in a safe way.

The very first lesson is to get into and out of the boat itself, this is very tricky and is helpful if you have the ski nearby.

When it comes time to start, you will need to lift out of the water so that you are now skiing on top of the water. There are different ways of doing this. One technique is to have the angle of the ski upright with you standing and then slowly start to move the boat. Once you have your position, you can increase the speed.

In order to complete the starting lift, hold the ski rope, which is towed, behind the boat. Timing is very crucial and if you are a bit late, you might miss out on the ski and land in water.

You definitely can’t defy gravity or nektons motion laws for a long time when on water and performing those stunts… If the skier is traveling to the right of the boat, and he is being pulled towards the boat, it is necessary for the turn to initiate.

The falling of is once again a technique by itself. When you are falling, let the rope go off. Do not hang on to the rope for long. Lest you can be pulled by the boat for a long time.

Be aware of the wind and the weather conditions as they can be conducive to your skiing.

Breathing is also an art that you need to exercise while on water. Too fast breathing can tire you off.

Always follow these precautions to ensure maximum fun while on water. But remember. Safety first.
